RFID

RFID Technology
By Max Bellamy

RFID technology is fast becoming a reality, not only for products in stores, but for tracking human beings. RFID means radio frequency identification. RFID technology uses transponders to store and remotely retrieve stored data. These transponders are also known as RFID tags. Generally, the RFID system has tags, tag readers, servers and application software. The tags are mobile devices with a digital memory chip and unique identification code that transmits the data, which is then read by the tags reader. Further processing is done by the application software.

RFID quickly gained attention with its ability to track moving objects. The refined RFID technology is going to replace the current barcode system. Though RFID is costlier than the current barcode system, it provides the advantage of having multiple independent data sources on one chip. And when one thinks of long-term gains, RFID is the future. Wal-Mart has already made it mandatory for their vendors to attach RFID tags to their shipments to improve supply chain management.

RFID technology not only provides greater functionality but also brings greater clarity. But as every coin has two sides, RFID technology has side effects too. The use of RFID creates the problems about the privacy of an individual. These concerns are due to the fact that RFID tags attached to products stay there even after the products have been purchased.

Thus, great technologies like RFID must be judiciously used to enjoy the benefits from it. Once all the negative issues are removed by standardization and by law, RFID will definitely be fruitful for mankind.
